þegar neyð skellur á leiðir UNICEF oftast alþjóðlegt hjálparstarf í vatns- og hreinlætisverkefnum, en með því að tryggja hreinlæti og aðgang að heilnæmu vatni má koma í veg fyrir sjúkdómsfaraldra.

The UNICEF Movement was launched in the spring of 2008. The project integrates Education for development, fundraising and sport activities (moveathon) for children in Iceland.
The goal for children is to complete as many laps or obstacle courses as possible (they get a sticker for each lap) with families sponsoring the student for each lap completed. Before the fun run, students watch a documentary and presentations on the situation of their peers in poorer countries and what UNICEF does to help them.
The campaign was modeled after Finish, Dutch and Norwegian projects. Each school gets information and campaign material from UNICEF Iceland and intergrate the movement into its own curriculum. Usually the school dedicates a few days for education and fundraising, ending with a whole day of planned sport activities. Around 4000 students in 13 schools participated in the UNICEF Movement in 2009 and even more are participating in 2010.
